First of all we should know the difference between Samatha and Vipassana Meditation. Unless we are able to understand the difference between these two types of meditation, no one can practise any type of meditation very well because they get confused. So in Buddhism there are 2 types of meditation; one is Samatha Meditation and the other is Vipassana Meditation. . .

The mind must stay with the movement of the foot while you are walking. If the mind goes to other parts of the foot such as beneath the foot or knee then the concentration becomes weak. Unless you slow down your stepping, you are unable to watch precisely and energetically. Then your concentration is weak. . .

Sometimes while doing walking meditation your mind may go out or wander but you continue repeating mentally 'lifting, pushing, dropping'. When you reach the other wall you stand there, "Ha! My mind is going out (or wandering)". At that time you are startled by your finding. That is because you do not observe, you do not know the thought so you think you are observing the movement of the foot. . .

Today is the 10th August, 1992. The purpose of Samatha Meditation is to attain higher concentration of mind. We call it Jhana concentration. Sometimes Appana concentration, Appana Samadhi. Jhana concentration is translated as fixedness concentration. Appana Samadhi is translated as absorption concentration. Both are in the same sense.

Anapanasati, respiration meditation is mentioned in the Visuddhimagga as Samatha Meditation. In the Visuddhimagga there are 40 subjects of Samatha Meditation. Sometimes when the sun shines and the fan stops, then you may observe 'hot, hot..'. We have to take some time to observe it (i.e. to be patient) until it has stopped. The more we observe it, the deeper the concentration on it. The deeper the concentration becomes, the more penetrating our insight into it. . .
